What is a Standard Minute?

The unit of a Standard Minute is used to measure the amount of work content for a defined method at a defined performance level that any task requires. That defined level is Standard Performance (BS100).

Producing 60 standard minutes per hour, having taken appropriate rest is Standard Performance.
People can achieve higher than BS100 performance and others less than 100 for reasons described in our section on Performance Rating or Standard Performance.

The Standard Minute or Standard Hour is the same unit of measurement used to identify the time value of tasks in every business sector – admin, retail, finance, manufacturing, distribution, service, construction, transport, etc.

How do you calculate a Standard Minute Value (SMV)?

Total observed time (in minutes) 1.00
Remove any ineffective time (0.10)
So, relevant observed time (as elements) 0.90
X  Performance Rating x 90 0.81
Apply correct frequencies 2/3 0.54
Apply Contingency Allowance as relevant + 2% 0.55
Apply relevant Rest and Recovery Allowance + 10% 0.60
Standard Minute Value (SMV) 0.60

Productivity Pointer

It’s rarely a single issue that is the cause of a productivity problem. Often more than one resource issue lies at the root.

See what Standard Performance looks like

We have produced a film called “Standard Performance” which includes a range of real-life activities filmed in various industries.

All the activities are assessed at BS100 – Standard Performance. Viewers can also compare these with similar activities at less than 100 and greater than 100. We use these on our training courses for Rating analysts and in certain customer situations. Click here to order this film.
