Why measure work?

It’s fundamental management practice to evaluate the critical factors of work – method, time and performance – in order to establish work content. To be able to better plan, monitor and therefore influence, compare and control every aspect of your business, you need to understand how long it should take to do something, what resources will be involved and how much it will cost.

Guess work or measuring work?

The first form of work measurement was presumably a guess. OK, a guess is better than nothing, but it’s unsubstantiated and probably inaccurate. A desperate measure!

How many organisations still use this primitive technique to make serious business decisions?

It could be argued that the original technique has been superseded by an “educated guess”. Using personal experience, intuition and a bit of discussion to reach a decision is a technique that’s neither scientific nor accurate, but it’s fast. It’s still a desperate measure.

How many organisations still use this technique to make serious business decisions?

A good starting point

Look at just one aspect of your own business and ask these questions:

  • How long does it take using current methods?
  • How long should it take using current methods?
  • How long could it take if we refined and established less wasteful (leaner) methods?
  • Imagine what it would mean to your business to improve capacity or reduce costs by say 10-15% - or even more?

These are the principles of a method and time study. It’s a bit more involved than that, so why not just contact us and we can help you further.
