International variations finally resolved

Already applying industrial engineering techniques to derive time standards throughout an international automotive manufacturer seemed encouraging. But it transpired that the time standards were being generated in a number of different ways so the company had no consistent basis for comparison. They needed an accurate and consistent way to identify differences in measurement, not in approach, which they now have by using the MOST® technique throughout their organisation in ten different countries, thanks to our training and guided application.

Commercial sector
Actual processes and costs for a new contract were well above those costed for in the tender. Examination and measurement of the activities identified much higher work content than had been forseseen and therefore costed for. Several opportunities to improve were quickly auctioned, reducing costs by about 20%. A similar figure was identified as work beyond that prescribed and the data was used to seek a variation in the contract price. The new data provided then formed the basis for more accurate quoting and tenders.

Commercial sector
The contract to run third party admin contracts was due for renewal, but the company had been told the contract wouldn’t be renewed without a substantial reduction in price; they needed to find ways to achieve that. Some Scott-Grant productivity specialists undertook a detailed examination of the activities within the process, together with the creation of a database with all the time standards. This identified several areas of cost reduction and more effective working methods. Consequently the contract was renewed at a much lower cost whilst maintaining an acceptable margin.

Construction sector
Concrete results

Progress on site was critical and yet was being hindered by the final repetitive activity of pouring concrete, to the point where everything was slipping behind.  Scott-Grant analysts were asked to measure, to look at any possible improvements in method, resource or equipment and ideally to deliver a 20% higher output on a daily basis. Our productivity specialists reviewed and measured activities and methods throughout the whole process, including the final activity, and re-balanced it all, with the result that the ideal daily target was achieved.  Additionally a number of other initiatives were implemented, thereby removing the backlog.

Distribution sector
Picking the best

A sizeable and well organised warehouse operated as two shifts where each picker was issued with “hourly work” – but the content was not based on any measured standards.  Performances varied significantly – some people regularly ahead of target and others always adrift. Our productivity specialists established sensible standards, making the issued picks more easily balanced in work content and more like 40 minutes rather than an hour.  They also highlighted and removed excessive congestion and waiting for stock replenishment.  The results were nearly 40% higher targets for previously good picks and 100% improvements for the lower performers.  The company also has benefited from a significant improvement in organisation, routines and capacity as well as a reduction in costs for temporary staff.
